Video: Earth’s magnetic field changes over time. Earth is surrounded by a constantly changing magnetic field that shields our habitat against harmful radiation from cosmic rays and the solar wind. A new study in AGU’s journal Reviews of Geophysics summarizes what scientists currently know about how Earth’s magnetic field has evolved over the past 100,000 years. This animation shows how the intensity of Earth’s magnetic field changed from 44,000 to 38,000 years ago. Around 41,000 years ago, a geo

These animations illustrate several key elements of plate tectonics and show examples of how Earth's tectonic plates have moved over time. Watch Pangea split apart and form the modern continents, see mountains form in western North America and watch India collide with Asia. Animations created by Christopher R. Scotese, PALEOMAP Project/Northwestern University, and Ben A. van der Pluijm, University of Michigan. Read more about plate tectonics here: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/

New simulation: atmospheric waves breaking over Europe A new simulation investigates how very high altitude atmospheric waves caused by mountains break over central Europe. Researchers found that as the mountain wave breaks, its effects extend downstream of its original location by 500–1,000 km. The breaking generates a broad range of secondary waves with horizontal scales ranging from 20–300 km, to more than 420 km. The secondary waves that reach the thermosphere deposit their energy and moment
